Guru Nanak Gurpurab, also known as Guru Nanak Jayanti or simply Gurpurab, is one of the most important days for the Sikh community around the world. It is celebrated to mark the birthday of the first Sikh Guru, Guru Nanak, who was born on the full moon day of Kartik month according to the Hindu calendar. This year Gurpurab falls on November 30.

Guru Nanak Dev Ji was born in 1469 in the village of Talwandi in Punjab, now known as Nankana Sahib in Pakistan. He was the founder of the Sikh conviction, a faith that emphasizes devotion to one God, equality, and community service. He spent his life spreading the message of unity, peace, and love.
On Gurpurab, Sikhs wake up early in the morning and offer their prayers at Gurdwaras, which are the places of worship for the Sikh community. The day begins with the singing of Asaa-Ki-Vaar, a collection of hymns from the Sikh holy book, the Guru Granth Sahib, followed by a series of prayers and Guru ka Langar, a community kitchen where free food is served to all visitors regardless of their ethnicity or conviction.
Apart from conviction ceremonies, Sikhs also organize processions, which are known as Nagar Kirtans, where people sing devotional songs and perform traditional dances. The processions start from the Gurdwara and end at a pre-determined place after passing through various streets and neighborhoods. Sikhs decorate their homes and streets with lights and candles to mark the occasion.
Gurpurab holds great significance for the Sikhs, not only because it is the birthday of their first Guru but also because it serves as a reminder of the values and teachings of Guru Nanak Dev Ji. It encourages Sikhs to follow his teachings and principles, which can be summed up in the words, "Sangat, Pangat, and Langar". Sangat means the company of like-minded people, Pangat means the act of sharing food with others, and Langar means the free community kitchen where food is served to all visitors without any discrimination.
In conclusion, Gurpurab is a day to celebrate the birth of Guru Nanak Dev Ji and to honor his teachings. It is a day to promote unity, equality, and community service. It is a day for Sikhs to come together to pray, sing, and share food with each other and with people from all walks of life.
